A little light, painted by hand.

Handcrafted from clay and individually painted by Mithila women artists in Nepal, each diyo (also known as diya or pala) brings colour, pattern and traditional artistry to one of South Asia’s most familiar symbols of light.

The surface is decorated freehand in the Mithila tradition, where intricate linework, bold pattern and storytelling transform a simple clay oil lamp into a small piece of art. Every brushstroke carries the hand of its maker, so no two diyos are exactly alike.

Choose from two sizes and light one during festivals, prayer and personal rituals, or simply use it to bring a warm, meaningful glow to your home.

Beautiful when used on its own and especially striking grouped together, these hand-painted diyos also make thoughtful gifts for Diwali, Tihar, housewarmings and special occasions.

The craft

Mithila art has long been practised across Nepal’s Madhesh region, with women playing an important role in carrying the tradition from one generation to the next.

By bringing Mithila artwork onto everyday objects such as these clay diyos, the craft continues in a form that can be used, displayed and enjoyed in contemporary homes.

Natural variation

Variations in colour, pattern, brushwork and clay finish are part of the handmade process and make every diyo unique.

Care & safety

Wipe gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

When lit, place the diyo on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Never leave a burning flame unattended and keep away from children, pets and flammable materials.
